Operating Partner
Dr. Jeff Brant has served as an Operating Partner to Cimarron Healthcare Capital since 2021. Dr. Brant has over 30 years of international executive veterinary leadership and multi-location veterinary management experience, including recently serving as the Chief Operating Officer of LegacyVet and Chief Business Development Officer at Hippo Manager Software Inc. Prior to LegacyVet and Hippo, Dr. Brant co-founded and was an executive leader for many years at Banfield Pet Hospital, the largest veterinary practice in the world and an innovative leader in the veterinary industry. Prior to co-founding Banfield, Dr. Brant owned and operated veterinary clinics in Oregon.
Dr. Brant received his Master of Business Administration from Duke University, a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Oregon State University, and a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Oregon State University. Dr. Brant is married to Dr. Kris Otteman; they have three children.
Senior Associate
Daniel is an Associate at Cimarron where he is responsible for deal sourcing, due diligence, financial modeling, market research and analysis, and assisting in investment portfolio operations.
Prior to joining Cimarron, he worked as an investment banking analyst at Evercore in their Houston office. While with Evercore, Daniel advised clients across the energy value chain on a wide scope of transactions including sellside and buyside M&A, equity capital markets, and activism and corporate defense. Daniel received his Master of Accountancy and Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Brigham Young University.
Associate
David is an Associate at Cimarron where he is responsible for deal sourcing, due diligence, financial modeling, market research and analysis, and assisting in investment portfolio operations.
Prior to joining Cimarron, he was a consultant for Accenture Strategy in their New York office. While with Accenture Strategy, David advised a variety of clients across the firm’s M&A, Healthcare, and Private Equity practices.
David received his Bachelor of Science in Finance from Brigham Young University.
Founder and Managing Partner
James is a Managing Partner of Cimarron Healthcare Capital, where he is responsible for the firm’s operating and investing activities, including: sourcing, executing, monitoring and divesting portfolio companies. James has been active in the healthcare industry since 1998 and has been a principal investor in the industry since 2000. James is an active investor and board member with experience across numerous sectors spanning the healthcare industry, including: health and wellness, alternate site care providers, consumer-driven healthcare, benefits management, long-term care, healthcare payments, life science services, healthcare technology and technology-enabled services.
Prior to founding Cimarron Healthcare Capital, James spent 10 years at Genstar Capital, a middle-market private equity firm with over $3.0 billion in assets, where he led the healthcare services investment effort and was a member of the firm’s investment committee. Prior to that, James worked at MedEquity Investors, a healthcare-focused growth equity fund in Boston. He began his career as an investment banker at Lehman Brothers in the Global Healthcare Group in New York.
James earned an MBA from Harvard University and a BA in English from Brigham Young University.
Vice President
Stuart is a Vice President at Cimarron where he is responsible for deal sourcing, due diligence, financial modeling, market research and analysis, and assisting in investment portfolio operations.
Prior to joining Cimarron, Stuart was a Senior Associate at Tower Arch Capital, a middle market private equity firm based in Salt Lake City. Stuart began his career as a consultant for Monitor Deloitte in their Chicago office.
Stuart received his Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School, with distinction, and has a Bachelor of Science in Finance from Brigham Young University.
Managing Partner
Nick joined Cimarron Healthcare Capital at the firm’s inception. Nick is responsible for deal sourcing, due diligence, financial modeling, market research and analysis, and assisting in investment portfolio operations.
Prior to joining Cimarron, Nick was a Consulting Associate at Charles River Associates (CRA) in Boston, MA. While at CRA, Nick helped coordinate and deliver management consulting projects for industry leading life science and healthcare organizations. Prior to joining CRA, Nick was an associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) serving clients primarily in the private equity industry.
Nick received his Master of Business Administration from The Wharton School and has a Master of Accountancy and Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Brigham Young University.
Controller & Chief Compliance Officer
Matt is the Controller at Cimarron where he is responsible for financial reporting, compliance, investor relations, HR, and internal reporting.
Prior to joining Cimarron, Matt worked at Carta and Standish Management servicing multiple investment funds. During his experience, he worked with multiple venture and private equity funds in preparing client financial statements and all other investor related reporting. He began his career as an auditor at Eide Bailly LLP, focusing on audits for public, private for-profit, non-profit, and government entities.
Matt received a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Brigham Young University - Idaho.
Managing Partner
Mr. VandenAkker joined Cimarron in 2020 as Managing Partner and brings 18 years of healthcare experience to the firm.
Prior to joining Cimarron, Jason was CEO and Portfolio Manager of Elevate Portfolio, a group of healthcare service companies including AAPC, Drummond Group, Stratford Pharmaceuticals, and others. Jason was previously CEO of AAPC, held executive roles at Optum including Chief Operating Officer/General Manager of its Complex Medical Conditions business, and worked in professional services at Parthenon Group and private equity firm MedEquity Capital.
Jason holds an MBA from the Harvard Business School and degrees in Economics and Political Science from the University of Utah. He lives with his wife and four children in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Michael S Wilstead has served as an Operating Partner to Cimarron Healthcare Capital since 2017. Mike has been an executive in Healthcare, Information Technology and Education companies for the last 25 years. Mike served as President and CEO of Career Step, LLC, an online medical education school with over 30,000 students worldwide. Before Career Step Mike was President and CEO of the sixth largest healthcare staffing company, InteliStaf Healthcare. Prior to InteliStaf Healthcare, Mr. Wilstead was President and COO of QuadraMed, a publicly traded healthcare IT software company. Prior to QuadraMed Mike held various sales, management and executive positions at STERIS/AMSCO International, a service and medical device provider. Mike is married to Denise Wilstead; they have 4 sons and 6 grandchildren.

Strategic Advisor
Bob is a founding investor with Cimarron Healthcare Capital. Bob also founded Osage Partners in 1990 and has built a track record as a top-performing investor. He is a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he is a partner in a fourth generation family business. Prior to founding Osage, Bob clerked with the honorable Walter K. Stapleton, U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals, and practiced corporate law at the Philadelphia law firm of Wolf, Block, Schorr & Solis-Cohen. Bob’s previous investments include Zany Brainy, Inphonic, Internet Capital Group (NASDAQ: ICGE), and GHR Systems (acquired by Metavante).
Bob is a graduate of The Yale Law School, where he was an editor of The Yale Law Journal, and of Yale College, from which he graduated summa cum laude. Bob is a trustee of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Thomas Jefferson University, and Jefferson Health System. He is also a former President of the Board of Trustees of The Philadelphia School and a past member of The Yale Law School Fund.
Strategic Advisor
Abir is Co-founder and Executive Chairman at Gravie, where he is responsible for overall leadership of the company. Abir was the founding CEO of Gravie and held that position through 2019.
Prior to founding Gravie, Abir was co-founder and CEO of Bloom Health where he led the team that pioneered the private exchange model of financing health benefits. Prior to founding Bloom Health, Abir was co-founder and president of RedBrick Health. Under his leadership, RedBrick Health launched an industry-leading health earnings system, created innovative products and achieved health improvement results that far surpassed its competitors. Before founding RedBrick Health, Abir co-founded Definity Health where he was involved in the creation of the personal care account, the predecessor to the health savings account.
Abir began his career at Deloitte Consulting where he advised managed care organizations and integrated delivery systems on mergers, acquisitions and turnaround strategies. He has also worked as an advisor to Fidelity Investment’s Health and Welfare department where he helped launch their benefit consulting business.
Abir earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from Lawrence University and his MBA from Harvard Business School. He serves on several Boards, including that of Allina Health, the Animal Humane Society and The Compassion Museum. He is also a Trustee at Lawrence University, where he serves on the Executive Committee.
Strategic Advisor
Bob has been involved with Cimarron Healthcare Capital since its inception as an advisor and operating partner to the firm. Prior to joining Cimarron, Bob was an advisor to Genstar Capital in their healthcare practice. He currently serves as a Director at Netsmart Technologies, Inc. and Valence Health. Bob was a former Director at Evolution1, Inc.
Bob served with UnitedHealth Group for more than 20 years, from 1986 to 2008, becoming CEO of UnitedHealthcare in 2000. In 1986, he had his first large regional role as President and Chief Executive Officer of Lincoln National/UnitedHealthcare Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Over the next 12 years, Bob held various multi-state and single-state responsibilities in the Midwest principally around the Ohio market. He led all of United’s acquisitions that were health plan-focused during this period of the company’s extensive growth. In 1998, Bob was named President and Chief Operating Officer of UnitedHealthcare, and after serving as CEO for seven years, he became Senior Vice President of UnitedHealth Group in 2007.
Prior to joining UnitedHealthcare, he was one of the early employees of Peak Health Plan from 1982 to 1986 before it was acquired by UnitedHealth Group, joining as Director of Operations and becoming CEO of Southern Colorado in 1984.
